Frequently Asked Questions
What is PDF/A?
PDF/A is a standardized PDF format designed for long-term preservation. It restricts certain PDF features so documents remain reproducible and accessible in the future.
How is PDF/A different from a normal PDF?
A normal PDF is flexible for everyday sharing. PDF/A is intended for archiving and reduces dependencies such as external fonts or content that may not be available later.
Which PDF/A version should I use?
Use the supported profile shown by PDFStack. The current conversion service exposes PDF/A-1b, which focuses on visual preservation and broad archival compatibility.
Can I convert multiple PDFs to PDF/A?
Yes. Add multiple PDFs, apply the same supported PDF/A profile, track each file independently, and download successful results individually or as a ZIP.
Does PDFStack validate PDF/A compliance?
PDFStack shows validation separately from generation. Formal PDF/A validation is currently unavailable unless a dedicated validator is integrated, so generated files are not labeled compliant.
Can scanned PDFs be converted to PDF/A?
Scanned PDFs can be processed where the conversion engine accepts them. OCR is not forced automatically; use searchable PDF or OCR tools first if searchable text is required.
Will fonts and images be preserved?
PDFStack asks the conversion engine to create archival output and embed standard fonts where supported. Exact rendering can depend on the source PDF and available fonts.
Is PDF/A required for government records?
PDF/A is often preferred or requested for records workflows, but requirements vary by organization and jurisdiction. Check the specific policy that applies to your records.
What happens if validation fails?
If validation is available and fails, treat the file as generated but not formally validated. Review the issue, repair the source PDF if needed, and convert again.
What happens to uploaded files?
Files are uploaded temporarily for archival conversion and handled according to PDFStack’s current file-retention policy.
